"The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe."
SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) was featured in the movie Contact. They're not looking for "close encounters of the third kind"... they just want evidence of intelligent life in the universe other than us (assuming we're "intelligent").

Re: SETI
Fri, March 19, 2004 - 11:31 AM(Mar 19, 2004) Billionaire Paul Allen has committed $13.5 million to support the construction of the first and second phases of the Allen Telescope Array. Construction of the array is now underway at the Hat Creek Observatory, 466 km northeast of San Francisco; the first phase will include the development of 32 6.1-metre radio telescopes. The second phase will see an additional 174 built. Eventually there will be a total of 350 identical dishes built. Once the first 32 dishes are completed, the array can begin scientific operations.

Re: SETI
Fri, March 19, 2004 - 2:16 PMThey are closing down the first part of SETI where you could download units and have your computer crunch numbers for you. This was called Phoenix. The next phase will be using a new type of program that is more robust than the old one. It is BOINC. This is a good program because it will use ever single bit of processing power your computer can push out. The old SETI program is being retired.
Personally I think they need to look at light frequency as a source of communication next. But that is just my point of view.
